PST Contribution Day: Four Questions Every P&G Employee Should Ask
Every July, thousands of P&G employees receive one of the largest annual contributions they'll make toward retirement: the annual Profit Sharing Trust (PST) contribution.
For many employees, the routine is simple—log in, check the contribution amount, and move on.
We think July offers something even more valuable: an opportunity to make sure your retirement strategy is still aligned with your long-term goals.
Markets change. Retirement timelines evolve. Families grow. Portfolios drift. Yet many employees leave the same investment elections in place for years without asking whether they still reflect the financial future they're trying to build.
Whether you're early in your career or approaching retirement, here are four questions worth asking after your annual PST contribution posts.
1. How Should I Invest This Year's Cash Contribution?
Each annual PST contribution consists of two components:
P&G common stock, which must remain at or above the plan's required minimum allocation.
A cash contribution, which can be invested among the investment options available within the PST.
While many employees naturally focus on the company stock portion, the cash contribution deserves just as much attention. Every year's contribution is a new opportunity to intentionally build your retirement portfolio.
Instead of simply leaving your elections unchanged, ask yourself:
- If I were investing this money for the first time today, would I make the same choices?
- Do my investments still match my retirement timeline?
- Has my comfort with investment risk changed?
The specific funds you choose matter, but the bigger objective is creating an allocation that supports your long-term financial goals.
2. Does My Overall Asset Allocation Still Make Sense?
Investment portfolios naturally drift over time.
Strong market performance, annual contributions, and changing retirement objectives can gradually move your allocation away from what you originally intended—even if you haven't made a single investment change.
That's why we view PST Contribution Day as an annual portfolio check-up.
Ask yourself:
- Am I invested the way I would choose today, or simply the way I was years ago?
- Does my current allocation still reflect how close I am to retirement?
- Is my portfolio appropriately diversified across stocks, bonds, and other investments?
Often, only modest adjustments are needed. The important part is making those decisions intentionally rather than allowing your portfolio to evolve by default.
3. How Much P&G Stock Do I Really Own?
This is one of the most common questions we receive.
The required 40% allocation to P&G common stock inside the PST is exactly that—a plan requirement. Whether it makes sense to own more than that depends on your individual financial situation.
Rather than looking only at your PST, we encourage employees to evaluate their total exposure to P&G across all accounts.
That may include:
- Profit Sharing Trust (PST)
- P&G Savings Plan
- RSUs and Stock Options (NSOs)
- Brokerage accounts holding P&G stock
- Any other company stock you own
Many long-tenured employees are surprised to discover that a significant portion of their investable assets is tied to the success of a single company once everything is added together.
P&G has been an exceptional business for generations, and many employees have built meaningful wealth through company stock. At the same time, concentration risk is real. The appropriate amount of company stock should be evaluated within the context of your entire financial picture—not just one retirement account.
4. Have My Financial Goals Changed?
Sometimes the right investment allocation changes not because the markets changed—but because your life changed.
Take a moment to ask yourself:
- Has my retirement timeline changed?
- Am I planning to purchase another home?
- Have my income needs changed?
- Have I welcomed children or grandchildren?
- Has my estate plan been updated?
- Am I thinking about Roth conversions or other retirement tax strategies?
- Has my spouse's retirement timeline changed?
Your investment strategy should support your financial plan—not the other way around.
Our Perspective
The annual PST contribution is more than a deposit into your retirement account—it's one of the best opportunities each year to step back and review your overall financial strategy.
Every July, we encourage P&G employees to:
- Review how this year's cash contribution is invested.
- Confirm that their asset allocation still aligns with their goals.
- Evaluate their total exposure to P&G stock across all accounts.
- Consider whether changes in life or retirement plans warrant adjustments.
Sometimes you'll conclude that everything is exactly where it should be. Other times, a thoughtful review can help ensure your retirement portfolio continues to reflect your long-term objectives.
The annual PST contribution doesn't require you to make changes—but it does deserve your attention.
